Latino Lawmaker’s Office Targeted with Toxic Substance

The Tucson office of Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva received a package on Thursday that contained a white powder determined by police to be toxic.

The envelope, which was marked with swastikas, was examined by local law enforcement including a hazardous material team and was turned over to the FBI.

According to a Grijalva spokesperson, the dozen staffers in the office were given a clean bill of health and sent home.

This is the third time that the southern Arizona Democrat’s offices have been targeted this year.  In April, two district offices were closed when a man called threatening “to blow everyone’s head off,” and in July, a Grijalva staffer in Yuma found a bullet that had shattered the window of their office there.

Grijalva, who is in a tight race for re-election, has been targeted by the right wing for speaking out nationally against Governor Jan Brewer’s signing of the state’s controversial anti-immigrant law, SB 1070.
