On Wednesday, First Lady Michelle Obama came together with Sesame Street’s Elmo and Rosita along with the Produce Marketing Association and the Partnership for a Healthier America for an announcement about marketing healthier foods to children. This announcement came after Mrs. Obama called on stakeholders to begin promoting healthier products and reduce the marketing of unhealthier products to children.

“These new efforts are so incredibly important, because right now, when it comes to marketing food to our kids, as you all know, the deck is stacked against healthy foods like fruits and vegetables,” said First Lady Obama.

After the announcement, Mrs. Obama, Elmo and Rosita gathered with school kids from MD, VA and WV, who’s schools are starting to offer healthy snack options, for the annual harvest of the White House Kitchen Garden.

Mrs. Obama had the elementary students join her in the White House Kitchen Garden to help harvest the fall’s garden. Two of the schools that participated included Washington DC’s Harriet Tubman Elementary and Bancroft Elementary, schools who regularly help with the harvesting.

Beginning next school year, all schools will be required to follow the “Smart Snacks in School” nutrition standards, forcing vending machines and booth-lines to be healthier. Numerous schools across the U.S. have met or are working to meet these standards to make sure children are getting the nutrition they need to live healthier lives.
