Trump Shutdown Threat Over Border Wall Still Looming

On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that President Trump is firm in his commitment to construct his proposed border wall. Sanders claimed that the wall, a signature campaign promise during Trump’s 2016 campaign, is vital to the nation’s security and the immigration system.

“The President has made no secret that this is a priority for him, and he continues to advocate for it and he’ll continue to make sure that we move forward to secure the border and secure our country,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters, per White House pool reports.

Sarah Huckabee’s response comes following Trump’s Tuesday speech, in which he declared he would not back down from his threat to shutdown the government should Congress refuse to authorize funding for the wall. Trump has previously claimed that Mexico would fund the construction of the wall.

“President Trump’s multibillion dollar border wall boondoggle is strongly opposed by Democrats and many Republicans,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. “Democrats will stand fast against the immoral, ineffective border wall and the rest of Republicans’ unacceptable poison pill riders.”

Democratic leadership made it clear it will oppose all efforts to secure funding for the wall. Huckabee says Trump remains committed to working with Congress to make sure that they move forward with the wall.
