Becerra to Replace Richardson?

becerra

Becerra, a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and the House Committee of the Budget, turned down Obama’s earlier offer to be U.S. Trade Representative because he did not want to give up his House seniority. Recently, he also was elected to serve in the House democratic leadership making him the highest ranking Latino in Congress.

But several sources say that Becerra might be tempted to leave Congress, where he has been for 16 years, for the Commerce slot. Also, Hispanic groups are strongly pushing another Hispanic nominee to ensure that minorities, especially Hispanics, are properly accounted for in the Census, which will be administered by the Commerce Department in 2010.
