McCain to Vote Against Sotomayor

Despite recently saying he felt the GOP needed to reach out to Hispanics, Senator John McCain of Arizona announced today that he will be voting against Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

He explained that, he had “great respect” for the judge, but what he views as a “long public record of judicial activism” was unacceptable in his eyes. He cited a 1996 law review article in which she wrote that “a given judge (or judges) may develop a novel approach to a specific set of facts or legal framework that pushes the law in a new direction.”

This leaves the number of GOP senators in support of Sotomayor at six. With all sixty Democrats expected to vote in her favor, confirmation is likely.
