Seven Illinois Congressmen Call for Immigration Reform

luisgutierrez

Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D) is one of seven Illinois Representatives that are pushing for immigration reform legislation to be passed this fall. These legislators signed a letter to President Obama saying laws need to be enacted that keep immigrant families together, protect workers and provide safe migration opportunities.

These seven representatives, and other immigration reform proponents in Congress, are working with activist groups such as the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and the National Council of La Raza to prepare a push for legislation on this issue.

Some believe that President Obama and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano have been softening up by restricting enforcement and taking aim at overzealous sheriffs like Arizona’s Joe Arpaio, while others believe the President is not pushing strongly enough for reform or amnesty legislation. It is clear that the debate is likely to be a long and tough one.

Publicly, the President is in favor of immigration reform, and it is expected to be on the agenda when Congress returns in September.
