ALMA Awards to Honor Latinos in Hollywood

The 2009 American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Awards – the only show of its kind that honors outstanding Latino entertainers, sports figures and artists, will air on Friday, September 18th on ABC at 8/7 pm Central.  Founded in 1995 by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) as a way to promote positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment and sports world, the ALMA awards this year will be co-hosted by Latino super-stars Eva Longoria and George Lopez.

NCLR CEO and President Janet Murguia said in a statement, “Latino entertainers make us all incredibly proud each and every day, but we still have a long way to go before our numbers are properly reflected in popular culture. That’s why in 1995 we founded the ALMA Awards to help promote fair, accurate, and representative portrayals of Latinos in entertainment. We hope that by honoring the talents of those working today, we will inspire a new generation to continue on the trail that they have so brilliantly blazed.”

The long-time annual host Longoria Parker said, “The ALMA Awards is a special show because it represents the determined spirit and soul of the Latino people.”

This year’s show features performances from some of the most accomplished Latino artists including Shakira, David Archuleta, Nelly Furtado, Pitbull and Sean Kingston.

Stay tuned and don’t miss a terrific show!!
