California State Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez Declares Candidacy for Lieutenant Governor

California Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez has declared he will run for Lt. Governor

State Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez filed the necessary paperwork yesterday to become a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor in California.  The second-in-command position is currently vacant and embroiled in turmoil, as has been reported in La Plaza, since Governor Schwarzenegger tried unsuccessfully to appoint Republican Abel Maldonado to fill the seat.  Maldonado already has declared his intentions to run for Lt. Governor in November.

The race for the this state wide position, which brings very little legislative authority, has garnered a lot of attention recently with late-entering candidates who include Los Angeles City Councilmember Janice Hahn, the daughter and sister of former LA Mayors Kenneth and James Hahn, respectively, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newson, who filed a ballot statement just prior to the deadline.  Newson previously was a declared candidate for Governor, pitting him against former Governor and current Attorney General Jerry Brown in the Democratic primary.  Late last year, however, he withdrew from that race.

Florez has argued that he is the best candidate to carry the Latino vote and thus defeat the Republican in this race who is widely expected to be Maldonado.
