Cuban Immigrants To Be Allowed Passage Through Central America

migracion

Thousands of Cuban immigrants trapped in Costa Rica and Panama on their way north to the United States may be permitted to continue traveling by way of El Salvador and Mexico according to an agreement of the Central American Integration System reached this week that would create a pilot humanitarian transfer program.

The program will only apply to Cuban immigrants stranded in Costa Rica with valid travel visas.

Immigrants have been in a state of limbo since November of this year after Nicaragua closed its borders to the Cuban nationals citing a risk to its national sovereignty. Thus far Costa Rica has issued about 8,000 visas to Cuban migrants.

Statements from the foreign ministries of Guatemala and Costa Rica indicated that the Cuban immigrants would be transported by air to El Salvador and would continue on to Mexico by bus in January of 2016.
