Controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio endorsed Donald Trump in Marshalltown, Iowa this week at a campaign stop with only a week to go before the first in the nation caucuses.

Trump’s campaign issued a statement from Arpaio that read, “Donald Trump is a leader. He produces results and is ready to get tough in order to protect American jobs and families. I have fought on the front lines to prevent illegal immigration. I know Donald Trump will stand with me and countless Americans to secure our border. I am proud to support him as the best candidate for President of the United States of America.”

Donald Trump continues to lead in Iowa, New Hampshire and nationally. Despite rhetoric from the candidate that has been met with harsh condemnation on all sides, Trump’s lead has only increased with a new CNN poll showing his support topping 41% nationally.

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) Hispanic Media Director Pablo Manriquez issued a statement that said “Today Donald Trump continued his efforts to divide Americans on his way to the GOP nomination by accepting the endorsement of infamous anti-immigrant Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Marshalltown, a city with one of the largest Latino populations in Iowa. “Donald Trump claimed he’s a uniter who will bring the country together, but demonizing immigrants and campaigning with divisive figures like Sherriff Joe Arpaio show he’s anything but.”
