The New Congress Set to Focus on Immigration Reform and Border Security

According to a recent NBC News poll that tested seven different policy proposals for the new 118th Congress, two of the most popular policies Americans say the new Congress should consider are immigration reform and border security.

From the poll, 80% of Americans support providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who meet specific requirements. 75% of Americans support taking a harder line against China, and 72% support addressing immigration by increasing border security.

From the 80% of Americans who support a pathway to citizenship, it is interesting that the majority of support comes from Democrats at 94%, independents at 77%, and Republicans at 67%. Support for increased border security also is backed by majorities of Republicans at 90%, independents at 72%, and Democrats at 56%.

However, what is popular doesn’t always get turned into legislation that will become law. This was seen in the comprehension of immigration reform in 2013, which combined a pathway to citizenship and increased border security.
