Solis is One Step Closer

Unions, Women’s and Hispanic groups are breathing a sigh of relief as Hilda Solis is now one step closer to being confirmed as the Secretary of Labor.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee yesterday forwarded the California congresswoman’s nomination to the full Senate, which is expected to vote before leaving town for the President’s Day recess.

Last week, the committee delayed voting on her confirmation after questions arose about her pro-labor activities and reports claimed that her husband had paid an estimated $6,400 to settle outstanding tax liens against his auto shop. The White House has stated that Solis and her husband were not aware of the liens until a newspaper reported them, and that Solis was not involved in her husband’s business.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said,”I think that process will hopefully conclude quickly, “The president has confidence in her ability to continue the department’s mission.
