Arizona Update: Gov. Jan Brewer Targets Ethnic Studies

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill that would prohibit any school curriculum that advocates “ethnic solidarity.” This bill would specifically target a Mexican-American ethnic studies program in the Tucson Unified School District that allows students to learn in history and literature courses about how particular ethnic groups influenced history.

State schools Chief Tom Horne, a Republican running for Attorney General supports Brewer’s signing of the measure. He says the district’s ethnic studies program promotes “ethnic chauvinism” and racial resentment towards whites.

The Tucson Unified School District denies its program promotes resentment.

On Tuesday, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement on the overall situation in Arizona for a “disturbing pattern of legislative activity hostile to ethnic minorities and immigrants.”
