GUEST BLOGGER SERIES: Senator Robert Menendez “Latinos Feel the Heat Like Everyone Else”

All issues are Latino issues, and it is time Latinos take their place at the table on climate change. With negotiations starting in Copenhagen this week, Latinos can help build momentum for a global response to climate change.  Too often, Americans believe Latinos are concerned only with Latino-specific issues like immigration reform, but – like everyone else — Latinos are part of the global community.

Latinos are participating in every major issue. Latinos understand the importance of promoting the use of renewable, sustainable energy. Reducing our dependence on foreign oil will create green jobs – jobs we as a community and a nation desperately need. Latinos have as much if not more of a stake in environmental issues as any community in America.

The Sierra Club found that 80 percent of Latino voters felt energy and environmental issues have an impact on their lives and the lives of their families. Fifty-one percent believed polluted air and water are the most critical problems when it comes to the environment. A soon to be released analysis by La Onda Verde of NRDC found that Latinos understand the impact global warming will have. Sea levels would rise. There would be flooding in coastal areas. Hurricanes will be stronger and Latinos will be affected like everyone else, if not more so.

Latinos are disproportionately poorer and concentrated in urban areas along the coasts that would be hit the hardest with rising sea levels. They would be less prepared to evacuate or relocate in the event of a natural disaster. And, certainly Latin-America and the Caribbean would feel the brunt of stronger storms and rising sea levels.

The bottom line? The Latino community, like everyone else, must understand the consequences of doing nothing about climate change and the economic opportunity of doing something, which is why Latinos need to be engaged in the debate.

The threat to our planet is real; and the opportunity that will come with a new understanding of our challenges and our responsibilities — not only to future generations but to the millions of Americans who are looking for work – is also real. The green jobs that will come with a drive toward a new, green, 21^st century economy will be the key to future economic growth.

Latinos need to be aware that America’s shift to new, clean, sustainable energy, a green economy, and smart growth would benefit all of us – especially young Latinos looking for a job but also for a career. A green economy and smart growth would create millions of new jobs and new opportunities in solar and wind energy, in home retrofitting, and the development of new technologies and new products.

For all of these reasons, Latinos need to take their place in the debate on climate change and the opportunity to shift to a green economy that reduces our dependence on foreign oil, creates jobs, and saves the planet.

Los latinos sienten el “ardor” como todo el mundo

Todo tema es  importantes para los latinos, y ya es hora que los latinos tomen su muy merecida posición en el debate sobre el cambio climático. Con las negociaciones en Copenhague comenzando esta semana, los latinos pueden ayudar que la respuesta global al cambio climático gane impulso y velocidad.

Por mucho tiempo, los americanos han creído que los latinos sólo se preocupan por temas en específico como la reforma migratoria, pero – como todos los demás – los latinos son parte de la comunidad global.

Los latinos están participando en todos los temas importantes.  Entienden la importancia de fomentar el uso de energía renovable y sostenible.  Reduciendo nuestra dependencia en petróleo creará empleos verdes- que nuestro país y nuestras comunidades necesitan desesperadamente. Tenemos tanto como, sino más, en juego sobre los temas del medio ambiente como cualquier otro grupo demográfico en los Estados Unidos

El Sierra Club encontró que el 80 por ciento de los votantes latinos piensan que los temas de energía y medio ambiente tienen un impacto sobre sus vidas y la de sus familiares.  El 51 por ciento cree que el aire y el agua contaminada son los problemas más graves cuando se trata de medio ambiente.  Un estudio a ser publicado por La Onda Verde de NRDC encontró que los latinos entienden el impacto que el calentamiento global tendrá en los niveles del mar, que causarán inundaciones en zonas costeras, que los huracanes serán más fuertes y que los latinos sentirán estos efectos tanto como todos los demás.

Los latinos suelen vivir en áreas de pobres y concentrados en zonas urbanas cerca a las costas que se verían afectadas por los altos niveles del mar.  Estarían menos preparados para evacuar o reubicarse en caso de un desastre natural.  Además América Latina y el Caribe ciertamente sufrirían más los efectos de tormentas fuertes y más altos niveles de mar.

Esto implica que la comunidad latina, necesita entender las graves consecuencias de una falta de acción tanto como las oportunidades económicas que existen en hacer algo para tratar el cambio climático.  Es por eso que los latinos, ahora más que nunca, deben participar del debate.

La amenaza a nuestro planeta es real; y la oportunidad de conocer los desafíos tomar las responsabilidades – no solo para las generaciones futuras pero para los millones de americanos que buscan trabajo- también es real.  Los empleos “verdes” que nacerán de la  nueva economía verde  del siglo 21 será la clave de nuestro crecimiento económico.

Los latinos tienen que saber que el cambio de los Estados Unidos a una economía nueva, sostenible, y “verde” beneficiará a todos – especialmente a los jóvenes latinos que buscan no solo un trabajo, sino una carrera.  Una economía verde crearía millones de trabajos nuevos y oportunidades nuevas en áreas de energía solar y de viento, modernización de viviendas, y el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y productos.

Los latinos tienen que tomar su lugar en la mesa de negociación en el debate sobre el cambio climático y reconocer la oportunidad de a una economía que reducirá nuestra dependencia en el petróleo extranjero, crearía nuevos empleos, y salvaría nuestro planeta.
