Federal Judge Rejects Challenge to SB 1070

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton dismissed a lawsuit filed against Arizona’s anti-immigrant law by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).

The basis of LULAC’s lawsuit filed in July rested on training materials given to law enforcement officers throughout Arizona.  The civil rights group claimed the materials promoted racial profiling.

Bolton also rejected a challenge by the Justice Department last week that challenged the section of SB 1070 that makes it a state offense to transport undocumented immigrants.  That amounts to six of the eight lawsuits filed against Arizona over the new law dismissed to date.

Other lawsuits by private parties have also been dismissed by Bolton, who blocked the most controversial part of the law from being implemented in July just a day before it was to be enacted.  The groups include Chicanos Por La Causa, the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders and a group of Phoenix police officers
