Alabama GOP Unveils Agenda with AZ-style Law

Capitalizing on the anti-immigrant movement across the nation, Alabama Republicans rolled out a hostile agenda on Monday against immigrants that includes plans for a bill similar to Arizona’s SB 1070.

The GOP in Alabama is advocating for a law that creates a new criminal trespass statute allowing local law enforcement to arrest undocumented immigrants for setting foot in Alabama.  The chairman of the Alabama Republican Party and House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard says the law will make it a crime to transport illegal immigrants anywhere in the state, even to the corner store.

The plan is part of a strategy the GOP in Alabama hopes will give them an upper hand over Democrats, who have controlled the legislature in the state for 136 years.  The plan also includes an effort to prohibit the federal government from compelling any Alabamian to participate in a health care system.

It is being lauded as the “2010 Republican Handshake with Alabama.”

Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little, D-Cullman, called the proposals “grandstanding.” He noted the un-cooperation of Republicans last spring  when Senate Democrats tried passing  three immigration bills, including one barring companies from getting state contracts if they employed illegal immigrants.

The newly unveiled plan also takes a hit at the health care system overhaul.  The agenda calls for passing a state constitutional prohibition against “any person, employer or health care provider from being compelled to participate in any health care system.”
